How acupuncture can help

Japanese acupuncture is gentle, painless, and works with the body's own capacity to restore balance. Below is a guide to some of the conditions seen most often in the clinic. If yours isn't listed, please get in touch — over twenty years of practice covers a broad range.

Women's Health

Menstrual irregularity, painful or heavy periods, PMS, and hormonal imbalance respond well to a constitutional approach that treats the whole person rather than the symptom alone. Treatment aims to restore a smooth, regular cycle by supporting the body's underlying energy and blood.

Many women come for cyclical complaints and find that sleep, mood, and digestion improve alongside them — a sign that the root, not just the branch, is being addressed.

Fertility

Acupuncture supports natural conception and is widely used alongside IVF and other assisted treatments. The aim is to improve circulation to the reproductive organs, regulate the cycle, and reduce the stress that so often accompanies trying to conceive.

Treatment is tailored to each stage of the cycle and, where relevant, coordinated with your fertility clinic's timing.

Pregnancy

Gentle acupuncture can ease many of the common discomforts of pregnancy — morning sickness, fatigue, back and pelvic pain, and heartburn — using safe, well-established point selection. Pre-birth treatment in the final weeks is a traditional way to help prepare the body for labour.

Menopause

Hot flushes, night sweats, disturbed sleep, mood changes and fatigue can all be eased by treatment that supports the body through this natural transition. The classical view sees menopause as a shift in the body's fundamental energy; treatment aims to smooth that shift rather than suppress it.

Back Pain

Acupuncture is well recognised for relieving both acute and long-standing back pain. Fine needles release tension in tight muscles, calm irritated nerves, and improve local circulation — often bringing relief where movement and rest alone have not.

Stress & Anxiety

Perhaps the most immediate benefit patients notice is a deep sense of calm. Treatment settles an over-active nervous system, easing anxiety, tension, and the physical toll of chronic stress — tight shoulders, shallow breathing, disturbed sleep.

Insomnia

Difficulty falling asleep, waking in the night, or unrefreshing sleep often reflect an imbalance the classical framework understands well. By calming the mind and restoring the body's natural rhythm, acupuncture can help sleep return without medication.

IBS & Digestion

Bloating, irregularity, reflux, and the discomfort of IBS respond to treatment that strengthens the digestive system and calms the gut–brain connection. Digestion is central to the classical view of health, so it is often addressed even when the main complaint lies elsewhere.

Immunity

Frequent colds, lingering infections, and general low resistance can be supported by acupuncture and Japanese moxibustion, which is traditionally used to strengthen the body's defences. Moxa has been shown to influence white and red blood cell counts and is a gentle way to build resilience.

Long COVID

Persistent fatigue, brain fog, breathlessness, and poor recovery after COVID are areas of particular interest in the clinic. Treatment focuses on restoring energy, supporting the nervous and immune systems, and helping the body find its way back to normal function at a sustainable pace.

Chronic Fatigue

Deep, unexplained exhaustion is understood in the classical tradition as a depletion of the body's fundamental energy. Treatment is gentle and gradual, aiming to rebuild reserves rather than force activity — supporting genuine, lasting recovery.

Pain Management

From headaches and migraines to joint, neck, and nerve pain, acupuncture offers a drug-free approach to both relieving pain and addressing its underlying causes. It can be used on its own or alongside other care.
